Compost

What is compost?

Compost arises from the aerobic breakdown of various typically discarded materials, encompassing food remnants, animal waste, foliage, straw, and other organic matter.

The process of composting involves blending carbon-rich components (“browns”), such as straw and foliage, with nitrogen-rich elements (“greens”), like food scraps and manure.

With the infusion of oxygen, passage of time, adept supervision, and the assistance of countless microorganisms, the outcome is a friable, pleasantly odorous, and nutrient-rich compost.

Why does it matter?

Traditional farmers depend on synthetic fertilizers derived from petroleum, which are intensive in fossil fuels and can lead to water pollution and harm to wildlife. Conversely, organic farmers opt for alternatives such as compost.

Compost not only significantly diminishes the requirement for chemical inputs among organic farmers but also entails recycling farm materials in the process.

Upon integration into the soil, compost furnishes a plethora of microorganisms and nutrients, fostering robust plant growth and advancement.
