Soil Health

What is healthy soil?

Healthy soil supports optimal plant growth, warding off diseases and pests without relying on external additives.

Healthy soil harbours a diverse ecosystem of bacteria, fungi, algae, protozoa, nematodes, and other microorganisms, which contribute significantly to plant vitality.

Soil bacteria synthesize natural antibiotics that bolster plant immunity against diseases, while fungi aid in nutrient and water absorption. Collectively termed “organic matter,” these bacteria and fungi enhance soil fertility. The higher the organic matter content in soil samples, the more robust its health.

Measuring healthy soil?

To assess soil health, farmers and scientists evaluate various criteria. They examine the abundance of microorganisms, the levels of essential nutrients like nitrogen, the soil’s water retention capabilities during dry spells, and its capacity to sequester carbon from the atmosphere.

At TerraWise, we believe in testing soil health. We gather soil specimens from our fields and compare those with soils under conventional farming. Subsequently, after laboratory testing, where these samples are desiccated and weighed for analysis, it is concluded that conventional agricultural methods tend to erode and deplete soils, whereas organic practices enhance soil quality and foster its gradual enrichment over time.

Why should it matter?

In healthy soil, aggregates play a crucial role in cohesion, preventing soil erosion and runoff. Its enhanced water retention capacity proves beneficial for plants during drought periods. Moreover, the increased presence of bacteria and fungi aids plants in combating diseases and pests. Additionally, healthy soil boasts higher concentrations of minerals and nutrients essential for plant nourishment.

Healthy soil serves as the cornerstone of our global food system. However, it currently faces significant threats. According to the United Nations, existing practices leave us with less than 60 years of viable topsoil for farming.

Each organic farming technique contributes to the cultivation of robust, resilient soil capable of sustaining abundant life both below and above the surface. This underscores the potency of organic farming as a formidable tool for soil conservation.
